Things to do May 3-9 in Chicago suburbs, Northwest Indiana

Here are some events happening from May 3 to 9 in the Chicago suburbs and Northwest Indiana.

Fiesta fun

A Cinco de Mayo party will be held May 3-5 at Brothers’ Field in Long Grove. Admission is free. At 340 Old McHenry Road. 847-805-8660; brothersfieldlonggrove.com.

This three-day party opens the Field for the summer season. There will be Latin music and dance lessons, food trucks, a tiki bar and on May 5, family fun with pinatas for kids.

Halloween hijinks

Halfway to Halloween is at 7:30 p.m. May 3-4 at the Joliet Haunted Prison in Joliet. Tickets are $29.99-$34.99; fast pass and skip-the-line available. At 401 Woodruff Road. Hauntedprison.com.

The creatures, monsters and things that go bump in the night can’t wait until October to unleash hell, choosing instead to lure guests in months in advance. The last tickets are sold at 10:15 p.m. but the prison will remain open until the last parties are through.

Wine down

The 18th annual Wine on the Fox event is from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. May 4 and 12 to 6 p.m. May 5 at Hudson Crossing Park in Oswego. Ticket packages are $20-$45. At 65 N. Harrison St. 630-554-3618; wineonthefox.com.

People can sample from more than 100 wine selections from Illinois wineries. There will also be craft beer, food trucks, live music and a playground for kids.

Beethoven’s 9th

Elgin Symphony Orchestra performs Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at 7:30 p.m. May 4 and at 2:30 p.m. May 5 at the Hemmens Cultural Center. Tickets are $10-$65; free to youth 17 and under. At 45 Symphony Way. 847-888-4000; elginsymphony.org.

Beethoven’s last symphonic work, Symphony No. 9, premiered 200 years ago on May 7, 1824, in Vienna, Austria. The Elgin Symphony Orchestra, together with the Elgin Master Chorale, will celebrate this anniversary. Also included in the program are Jessie Montgomery’s “Hymn for Everyone” and Mozart’s Ave verum corpus.

Both concerts will be held at, in Elgin. Conductor Chad Goodman will give a free, pre-concert chat one hour prior to each performance.

Santana tribute

Visions, a tribute to Carlos Santana, will play at 9 p.m. May 4 at the Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana’s Hard Rock Café venue in Gary. Tickets are free. At 5400 W. 29th Ave. 219-228-2383; hardrockcasinonorthernindiana.com.

Visions is a six-piece band that plays the music of Carlos Santana from his performance at Woodstock, his Grammy-winning “Supernatural” album and the “Santana 4” reunion album. Hard Rock Casino’s Hard Rock Café will offer a special Cinco de Mayo menu.
