Tire tracks in Gurnee-area yard lead to discovery of dead man in partially submerged pickup

The body of a man was found in a pickup truck found partially submerged in the Des Plaines River near Gurnee, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

The man has been tentatively identified as a 79-year-old Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, resident.

The vehicle, a 2016 Toyota Tacoma, had reportedly fled from police at around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, about 1.5 miles from the location where the truck was eventually found.

A resident of the 36500 block of North Illinois Route 41 arrived home at around 7:30 p.m. Thursday and saw tire tracks in the yard. The resident followed the tracks and saw the truck in the river.

Police arrived and found the man’s body inside. The truck was reported traveling the wrong way at around 3:40 a.m. Wednesday near Illinois Route 173 and Kilbourne Road, police said.

The incident remains under investigation.
