US Tech Firm, with 2 Romanians Among Founders, Invests $10M in AI Model

The American company Databricks, with two coders with Romanian origin among the founders, announces the DBRX generative artificial intelligence model, in which 10 million dollars and 8 months of training have been invested.

The AI model released by Databricks is available “open source” on GitHub and the artificial intelligence developer platform Hugging Face for research and commercial use, according to TechCrunch. It comes in two versions, one standard (DBRX Base) and one tuned (DBRX Instruct). Both may use public, customized or personal data to generate responses.

Databricks claims in a press release that the AI model performs better than other “open source” language models, such as LlaMa-2 by Meta (Facebook), Mixtral – Mistral AI or Grok by Elon’s startup xAI Musk. It performs better than ChatGPT-3.5, but lacks a multi-modal approach to be fully comparable to GPT-4.

Databricks was founded in 2013 by a group of professors from the University of California, Berkeley. The company develops database technologies, and its founders include the CEO of the company, the Swede Ali Ghodsi, as well as two computer scientists of Romanian origin: Ion Stoica (executive president of the company) and Matei Zaharia (chief technology officer).

Ion Stoica is a professor at UC Berkeley. He trained as an engineer first in Romania, where he obtained a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering at the Politehnica in Bucharest (1989). Stoica also holds a PhD from Carnegie Mellon University (USA). In America, he has won numerous awards and honors in the field of technology. Ion Stoica also co-founded other powerful companies in the USA: Anyscale and Conviva.

Matei Zaharia was born in Romania, but when he was a child, he moved with his family to Canada. He studied at the University of Waterloo, Canada, and then received his doctorate in the USA, at UC Berkeley, under the guidance of Ion Stoica. Matei Zaharia is known as the inventor of Apache Spark, one of the most used frameworks in data processing. He currently teaches at the American universities Stanford and MIT.
