Temperaturile extrem de scăzute şi furtunile de zăpadă au perturbat transportul şi au închis şcolile în Scandinavia, în timp ce vânturile puternice şi ploile abundente din vestul Europei au provocat inundaţii, probleme în transporturi, pene de curent şi cel puţin un deces, relatează The Guardian.
Miercuri, termometrele au arătat -40 de grade Celsius în regiunea nordică, pentru a doua zi consecutiv.
În localitatea Kvikkjokk-Arrenjarka, în Laponia suedeză, temperaturile au coborât la -43,6 grade Celsius, cea mai scăzută temperatură înregistrată în ianuarie în Suedia în ultimii 25 de ani, a anunţat agenţia suedeză de ştiri TT.
Temperaturile extrem de scăzute, zăpada şi vântul puternic au perturbat transporturile în întreaga regiune nordică, mai multe poduri fiind închise, iar unele trenuri şi feriboturi – suspendate. De asemenea, numeroase școli au fost închise din cauza gerului.

În Danemarca, poliţia i-a îndemnat pe şoferi să evite călătoriile inutile, deoarece vântul şi zăpada au afectat părţile de nord şi de vest ale ţării.
Valul de aer rece din Siberia şi regiunea arctică a coborât şi peste vestul Rusiei, temperaturile la Moscova şi în alte zone scăzând la -30 de grade Celsius, cu mult sub temperatura medie de la începutul lunii ianuarie.
Oficialii din Moscova, Sankt Petersburg şi alte zone au emis avertisment cod portocaliu de vreme rea, avertizând locuitorii în legătură cu posibile riscuri pentru sănătate.
Ravagii în vestul Europei în urma unor furtuni
Mai la sud, au predominat condiții mai blânde, dar cu ploi abundente și vijelii care au făcut ravagii în părți din vestul Europei.
În Marea Britanie, un şofer a murit marți, după ce un copac a căzut peste maşina lui, lângă orașul Kemble, în vestul Angliei.
Furtuna, care a fost numită Henk de către serviciile meteorologice oficiale din Marea Britanie, Irlanda şi Ţările de Jos, a cauzat întreruperi de curent, probleme de transport și daune materiale în Marea Britanie.
Peste 300 de avertismente de inundaţii au fost în vigoare miercuri în Anglia şi Ţara Galilor, în timp ce 10.000 de gospodării au rămas fără curent electric. O alertă de inundaţii severe, care înseamnă un pericol pentru viaţă, a fost anunţată pentru râul Nene din Northampton, în centrul Angliei.

În Olanda, autorităţile au anunțat că o mică secţiune a unui dig care reglează nivelul apei a fost distrusă miercuri după-amiază. S-a întâmplat după ce apa râului Maas a crescut, lângă oraşul Maastricht. Proprietarii mai multor bărci case au fost evacuaţi, ca măsură de precauţie.
În Franţa, ploile abundente au afectat de duminică regiunile nordice Pas-de-Calais şi Nord, forţând evacuarea a aproximativ 200 de persoane şi întrerupând curentul la 10.000 de gospodării, potrivit autorităţilor locale.
Sute de pompieri din toată Franţa s-au mobilizat pentru a salva oamenii din casele inundate. Serviciul meteorologic naţional a menţinut joi avertismente de inundaţii şi vânt pentru mai multe regiuni din nordul Franţei şi graniţele sale cu Belgia, Luxemburg şi Germania, fiind prognozate mai multe ploi, dar şi vânturi de până la 100 km/h.
O parte din Germania se confrunta, de asemenea, cu inundaţii, care ar putea fi agravate de mai multe ploi în nord-vestul Saxoniei Inferioare.
