Watch: BrhyM Share Official Music Video for “The Wild Whaling Life” from Debut Album ‘Deep Sea Vents’

Rmag Breaking News

BrhyM, composed of renowned singer-songwriter and Grateful Dead collaborator Bruce Hornsby and innovative chamber sextet yMusic, have released the music video for “The Wild Whaling Life,” the second single from the collaboration’s debut LP Deep Sea Vents. This offering follows the album’s release on March 1 and the preview track, “Deep Blue,” which was shared earlier this year. On top of this first shared record, Hornsby and yMusic will unite for a limited run of shows this upcoming April.

Directed and animated by Steven Mertens, “The Wild Whaling Life” music video manifests the deep sea themes and wide-eyed wonder throughout the album with stop-motion animation. In wide-open, colorful scenes, Mertens evokes the inspiration, curiosity, and even forboding that BrhyM found within the subject of the ever-changing and expansive ocean. The collaborative track, initially curated by yMusic, was sent over to Hornsby for lyrics and vocals, who took inspiration from Herman Melville’s Moby Dick.

“We started with a plucky, sliding cello groove,” CJ Camerieri and Nadia Sirota of yMusic explain. “When Bruce got his hands on it, he added the joyful, anthemic chorus. It felt to us like a classic Hornsby moment. Then we all stretched our arrangement legs, and found some really fun and unexpected textures.”

Deep Sea Vents, the latest collaboration between Hornsby and yMusic, consists of 10 water-themed tracks deciphering our interactions with the element. Produced by Hornsby and yMusic violinist Rob Moose, the record plumbs the deeps of human curiosity. While BrhyM did not set out to make an LP based on the sea, the tracks quickly came together as a representation of the expansiveness of the ocean and the depth within us all.

Hornsby and yMusic began collaborating in 2016 following a meeting at Eau Claire, Wis.’s, Eaux Claires Music & Arts Festival. The group first appeared on Hornsby’s 2019 LP release, Absolute Zero, before joining him for a spat of shows before the 2020 lockdown. Eight years before its official release, the two partnered to create the title track, “Deep Sea Vents,” as an encore at Hornsby’s shows.

Deep Sea Vents is out now. Tickets for BrhyM’s upcoming April shows are on sale now. For more information, visit brucehornsby.com or ymusicensemble.com.
