Thursday’s Five Facts

[1] APD arrest suspect in beating death outside homeless service provider – Albuquerque Police have arrested a man accused of beating another to death outside of Hope Village in Downtown Albuquerque. Police say in February a man in a wheelchair, identified as Jose Gracia, approached Mark Lavine, they say surveillance video shows Gracia yanking Lavine to the ground and beating him. Lavine was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

[2] Drivers reminded to slow down in school zones after crossing guard was nearly hit – Drivers are reminded to slow down in school zones. This comes after a crossing guard was nearly hit by a speeding driver just a few weeks ago. The incident happened earlier in the semester when a driver blew threw the crossing while a crossing guard was still there. The guard stumbled back to get out of the way, fell and hit her head on the sidewalk.  Lead crossing guard Rob Burford says thankfully that guard is doing okay. He said they see more speeding in school zones after long breaks like summer and spring break.

[3] Warmer weather with light winds around New Mexico – Thursday will see light winds, clear skies and warmer temperatures. Temperatures will climb into the 60s and 70s across New Mexico. Winds will be from the south at around 5 to 20 mph. Friday will be an even warmer, but windier day. Temperatures will stay above average all weekend, with dry, mostly sunny skies.

[4] Rio Rancho City Council set to discuss phase two of solar project – Rio Rancho City Council is holding a public hearing Thursday over site plan approval for the second phase of a solar plant near the double eagle airport. In October 2022, the council approved the first phase of the project. At Thursday’s meeting, the council will consider phase two of the project. The developer says when the whole project is complete, the site will produce 400 megawatts of renewable energy.

[5] ENMU awarded over a more than $60,000 grant from NASA – Eastern New Mexico University has been awarded a $60,855 grant from NASA in partnership with the WEX Foundation. ENMU partnered with to foundation for their project, “New Worlds Await You-Next Generation.” The project features a network of in-school and after-school clubs focusing on STEM. The program targets at risk and underserved middle school students with the development of space-STEM curriculum. ENMU says the grant will help with recruiting pre-service teachers and middle schools that will participate in the after school STEM program.
