[1] APD: Suspect grabbed officer’s rifle before police shooting – Albuquerque Police were involved in a shooting that left one man dead Thursday in the Walmart parking lot on Wyoming near Menaul. APD Chief Medina said officers were looking for Audriana Gonzales, who is believed to be involved in several armed robberies. They located her and a man who was with her, both had warrants out for their arrest. Officers took Gonzales into custody and the man went into Walmart, when he later came out of the store officers confronted him. During the confrontation, the suspect grabbed an officer’s firearm which led to multiple rounds being discharged. More than one officer fired their, according to Chief Medina. The suspect was shot and killed in the altercation, no police officers or civilians were injured.
[2] Albuquerque man sentenced to 36 months in prison for illegally selling guns – Marquez Martinez was convicted of buying and selling hundreds of guns over the last four years. Martinez told the agent he sold the guns to make a living. Federal agents found those guns on a murder suspect and a 15-year-old at Albuquerque’s West Mesa High School. A federal judge sentenced Martinez to 36 months in prison, once released, he will be subject to three years of supervised release.
[3] Warm temperatures through the weekend, but high winds return – Friday will be a warmer day, with mostly sunny skies in the morning, and partly sunny skies during the afternoon and evening. Winds will turn on this afternoon, and we will see 30 to 40 mph wind gusts across the state. The winds will die down, but stay breezy on Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures will be warm all weekend, reaching the 70s and 80s.
[4] UNM study finds connection between blue light and bird deaths – A new study led by University of New Mexico scientists sheds light on a potential cause of birds colliding with buildings. The study uncovered a connection between blue lights and bird deaths. The findings reveal that night-migrating birds are at greater risk of colliding with buildings lit with blue or white LED lights which is a finding that has not been extensively studied before. According to the study, between 365 and 988 million birds die from building collisions every year in North America
[5] ABQ BioPark announces Western lowland gorilla is pregnant – The ABQ BioPark revealed Nia Lewa, its 21-year-old Western lowland gorilla, is pregnant with her first child. The BioPark has had several birth and pregnancy announcements in the last few months including Rosie the elephant, Zoe the chimpanzee and a baby kangaroo. Nia is expected to give birth in July.
