Afternoon Briefing: Witnessing the eclipse

Good afternoon, Chicago.

By midmorning, the sun beat down on southern Illinois. Tribune reporter Adriana Pérez and photographer Eileen T. Meslar spent the day in Carbondale speaking with local residents and folks who traveled from out of state to see the total solar eclipse.

For Chicagoland residents who wanted to stay closer to home, the Museum of Science and Industry offered the opportunity to watch a NASA livestream of the event in the Giant Dome Theater and participate in space-related activities throughout the day.
