APD report shows details on 60 uses of force last month

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The latest use of force report from the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) shows the department used force in 60 incidents, three of which were fatal in March.

“APD is committed to using force to achieve lawful objectives in instances where use of force is objectively reasonable, necessary, minimal, and proportional given the totality of circumstances,” the department says in the report. Uses of force are categorized into three levels, with increasing seriousness and include things like supervisory orders and pointing a taser at an individual to fatal officer officer-involved shootings.

The data shows that most incidents in March were level 2 incidents. There were 35 level 2 incidents, 17 level 1 incidents, and nine level 3 incidents. And the uses of force occurred throughout the city.

Over the last year, the southeast portion of the city has seen the most use of force incidents, 189 incidents from April 2023 to March 2024. The vast majority of those were level 2 incidents.

Of the locals involved in use of force events in March 2024, 51% were Hispanic, APD data shows. Common 911 calls that resulted in uses of force in March were disturbance calls, family dispute calls, and suspicious person/vehicle calls.
