An Aurora man has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting in the city Jan. 13, Aurora police said.
Travares Mitchell, 49, has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder; one count of armed habitual criminal, a Class X felony; and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, a Class 2 felony; in connection with the death of his domestic partner, 46-year-old Serhonda Burnett, according to a news release posted on the Aurora Police Department’s Facebook page on Tuesday.
On Jan. 13, police responded to reports of a crashed vehicle and gunfire near Prairie Street and Woodlawn Avenue, officials said.
Officers found Burnett sitting in the passenger’s seat of the crashed vehicle with gunshot wounds, the release said. Officials said she was the only one in the vehicle.
Burnett was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later, according to officials.
A warrant for Mitchell’s arrest was obtained on Feb. 21, police said. Mitchell was arrested in Orlando, Florida, on March 6 and was transported to the Kane County jail, where he is currently being held, the release said.
