Evenimentul ceresc a fost vizibil, mai întâi, pe coasta de vest a Mexicului, începând cu ora 18.07 GMT (21.07, ora României). Traiectoria a traversat apoi 15 state americane, din Texas până în Maine, și s-a încheiat în estul Canadei.
A fost momentul când luna s-a poziţionat perfect între Pământ şi Soare, iar preț de câteva minute a adus întuneric în zonele unde a traversat America de Nord.
Astfel, milioane de oameni de toate vârstele au admirat fenomenul de pe străzi, alții din zgârie-nori. Mulți și-au adus și animalele de companie să vadă și ele eclipsa, protejați de ochelari speciali.

The much-anticipated solar eclipse will appear when the moon blocks the rays of the sun as it passes between the sun and the earth, casting a shadow on the earth. At 2:00 PM the solar eclipse was greeted by a good size crowd of people of all ages. This crowd extended from The Winter Garden Atrium (where I was standing) on the West side of Manhattan, next to The Hudson River, down to South Ferry. The eclipse ended by 4:36 PM Eastern time. The next eclipse in New York will be in the year 2079.
