First Trailer for Pakistan’s Hand-Drawn Animation ‘The Glassworker’

“The great ravine is disputed territory… so we go to war. Idiocy.” Mano Animation Studios has revealed a trailer for an animated feature titled The Glassworker, from filmmaker Usman Riaz as his first feature. This is premiering at the 2024 Annecy Film Festival in France this summer as a major premiere there – one of the first ever from Pakistan at the festival. It’s made by an animation studio called Mano, with a hand-drawn style reminiscent of Studio Ghibli’s early films. About the life of a young glassblower in training and his relationships over the years, as his land goes through war & strife. Young Vincent and his father, Tomas, run the finest glass workshop in the country and find their lives upended by an impending war in which they want no part. The arrival in their town of an army colonel and his young, talented violinist daughter, Alliz, shakes their reality & tests the relationship between father and son. Vincent falls in love with Alliz in a time when love doesn’t seem to matter for their country… Featuring the voices of Art Malik, Sacha Dhawan, Anjli Mohindra, and Tony Jayawardene. This is so clearly inspired by Ghibli, but it still might be good. // Continue Reading ›
