Functional and Non-Functional Testing

RMAG news

These two are types of software testing. Each type has a different purpose in ensuring the quality and reliability of a software product.

*Function Testing
*

Function testing Verify that the software application or product behaves correctly according to functional requirements. Each function is compared to the corresponding requirement. It’s invoked to test the functionality of the software by providing the inputs and validating the output against the user’s expectations.

Types of Functional Testing

Unit Testing
System Testing
Acceptance Testing
Regression Testing
Sanity Testing
Smoke Testing
Integration Testing

*Example of Function Testing
*

User Interface
Business processes
Data Maintenance
API’s and Integrations

*Non-Functional Testing
*

Non-functional testing is a type of testing used to evaluate the performance, usability, reliability, and security of software applications. The main objective of the non-functional testing is to ensure that the software meets quality standards like performance, usability, scalability and reliability.

*Types of non-Functional Testing
*

Performance Testing
Usability Testing
Security Testing
Compatibility Testing
Reliability Testing
Maintainability Testing

*Example of Non-Function Testing
*

Load testing to determine how the system behaves under heavy loads.
Security testing to identify and address potential vulnerabilities.
Usability testing to evaluate the user experience.

Differences between Functional and Non-Functional Testing:

Functional testing focuses on the operational aspect of the application. Non-functional testing covers non-functional attributes of any software. It tests everything not already verified by functional testing, such as performance, usability, stability, etc.
