High winds return with showers and cooler temperatures

Friday morning is off to a milder and quiet start. Clouds are pushing over the state, but sunshine will increase midday through the afternoon, from west to east.

Winds are light this morning, but high winds are expected across New Mexico today. Western New Mexico will see the highest gusts of 65 mph, while areas further east, including the Metro, will see winds up to around 55 mph, and the far east plains will see winds of around 45 mph. Winds will stay gusty through the night as a strong cold front moves east across the state. Winds will be just as strong on Saturday, with the highest winds of 65 mph focused along the central mountain chain and eastern NM.

Friday will be another warm day, but temperatures will cool by around twenty degrees on Saturday. Light rain and snow showers will be possible in western, central and northern New Mexico late Friday night through Saturday morning. The precipitation will continue in the northern mountains Saturday afternoon, but the rest of the state will dry out. Red flag warnings will be in effect both Friday and Saturday due to the dry air and high winds.
