INSCOP: Romanians Support Full Schengen Membership Despite Economic Blocks

Almost two-thirds of Romanians believe that our country has met all the criteria for admission with land borders to Schengen, but some European states are blocking Romania’s admission for economic reasons, according to a survey carried out by INSCOP commissioned by News.ro.

30.1% of Romanians believe that Romania has not yet been admitted with land borders to the Schengen Area because our country has not met all the necessary criteria. 60.1% are of the opinion that Romania has met all the criteria, but some European states block its complete access to Schengen for economic reasons. 9.8% do not know or do not answer this question.

67% of men and 54% of women are of the opinion that Romania has fulfilled all the criteria, but some European states are blocking the reception of Romania with land borders in Schengen. 62% of young people between 18 and 29, 52% of people aged 30 to 44, 58% of those aged 45 to 59 and 67% of those over 60 share this opinion.

Also, 42% of people with primary education, 63% of those with secondary education and 61% of those with higher education believe that Romania has met all the criteria, but some European states block the country’s full accession to Schengen. The same opinion is shared by 55% of people with low and very low incomes, 60% of those with medium incomes and 68% of those with high and very high incomes.

The majority of Romanians (60%) are of the opinion that the partial accession to the Schengen Area (without land borders) is determined by the blockade of some European states towards Romania. Only 30% believe that Romania has not met all the criteria for accession with land borders. The population’s frustration on this subject remains high and fully justified, given that neither the blocking of access to the Schengen Area for years, nor the partial accession have been credibly explained by the few hostile states of Romania. This feeling is also amplified by the fact that at this moment, only one country, Austria, is blocking the accession with the land borders, the majority of the member states, as well as all the European institutions repeatedly expressing their support for the full accession of our country to the Schengen Area” , says Remus Ştefureac, director of INSCOP Research.
