Monday’s Five Facts

[1] Former Albuquerque officer, accused of excessive force, to stand trial – Proceedings are set to begin in the trial of a former Albuquerque police officer accused of using unnecessary force against a man with disabilities. In August of 2022 Kenneth Skeens is seen on lapel video approaching a man at a self checkout. The man with disabilities was trying to buy a bike but was taking some time pulling cash out of a pouch when officers approached. A few moments later Skeens tells the man they’ll be charged with criminal trespassing. That’s when things escalate, and officers escort the man out of the store. The incident led to New Mexico’s Attorney General filing criminal charges against the former officer.

[2] Owners of Batter’s Edge batting cage look to sell business – Batter’s Edge batting cage has been around for about 50 years in the middle of a South Valley neighborhood off Sunset. After several years of operating the business, the owners are looking to sell the property. The Rudin family are owners of the business and are ready to sell it to someone interested in keeping it as a batting cage. They said business has been great, but that age has caught up to them. The owners said they don’t have a specific timeline as to when they would like to have the property sold by but would like to sell it as soon as possible. 

[3] Warmer temperatures return around New Mexico – All of the state will be warmer today, and temperatures will warm up around 20 degrees compared to Sunday’s temperatures in eastern New Mexico. Light winds of around 15 to 35 mph are expected, with mostly sunny skies until this afternoon. Clouds will build in western NM this afternoon, and a few showers will be possible in the western high terrain. The weather is looking quiet through Wednesday. The next storm will bring strong winds on Thursday and Saturday, with rain chances on Saturday.

[4] Car show raises funds for Honor Flight of Northern New Mexico – The 9th Annual Car Show benefiting “Honor Flight of Northern New Mexico” kicked off Sunday morning. All funds from the event will help send 31 veterans to Washington D.C. to see monuments and memorials dedicated to those who served. This year’s ‘Honor Flight Trip’ will be June 19 through 21.

[5] Volunteer applications being accepted for Valles Caldera National Preserve – Valles Caldera National Preserve is asking for volunteers to join their team. The park is looking for help with welcoming visitors, conducting plant surveys, support on trail projects and even assisting with research. Anyone interested in volunteering can apply here.
