LA Valley College breaks ground on a second new academic building

Los Angeles Community College District officials broke ground Monday on LA Valley College’s latest construction effort in an overall $900 million renovation and building program at the campus in Valley Glen.

Monday’s ceremony marked the start of construction for what the college is calling Academic Building 2, a 60,000-square-foot facility on Fulton Avenue that “includes modern, technology-enabled learning environments for communication studies, English, ESL and technology, which includes our manufacturing program,” said LAVC’s president, Dr. Barry Gribbons.

The development follows on the heels of Academic Complex 1, which remains under construction on Burbank Boulevard.

The first floor of Academic Building 2 will feature a technology lab for students in the college’s manufacturing program. In addition to classroom facilities, the building will include faculty offices.

The new building, which is replacing three aging structures directly off the main quad on the west side of the campus, was designed with sustainability in mind, according to a press release. It will meet LEED Silver certification standards.

NAC Architecture designed the building. The structure will feature a bright yellow spine that will extend into newly created green spaces, together echoing the school’s colors.

PCL Construction is the builder on the project.

LA Valley College was established in 1949 and currently serves over 17,000 students.

The college has benefited from more than a dozen major construction projects in recent years. Those currently under construction include the Valley Academic & Cultural Center at the north of the campus, as well as Academic Complex 1.
