For years, the Lennon-McCartney songwriting duo delivered classic cuts and forever staples of the rock-pop canon, from “Blackbird” to “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and “Dear Prudence,” just to name a few. With a 21st-century twist, the sons of The Beatles, Sean Ono Lennon and James McCartney, have come together to deliver a new co-written and composed number, “Primrose Hill.”

Formally released as James McCartney material, the song marks the second-generation musician’s first drop since 2016’s “Beautiful” and, according to his social media, the start of another wave of new music, “With the release of this song it feels like we’re really getting the ball rolling and I am so excited to continue to share music with you.”

“Primrose Hill” burgeons into pop-rock territory with a light shoegaze effect captured in the ethereal utterances contrived in James’ lines and instrumental output. “I had a vision as a child in Scotland, on what was a lovely summers day,” the musician wrote on social media. “Letting go, I saw my true love and saviour in my mind’s eye. ‘Primrose Hill’ is about getting the ball rolling with me & finding this person.”

Backing builds collide into catchy lines and present similarly to John and Paul’s lyrical charisma. Only “Primrose Hill” is like the modern adaptation of said songwriting style, leaning into the times and resembling, at times, the early 2000s, a la Peter Bjorn, John, and others.
