National Park Service looking for cattle wrangler for Valles Caldera

JEMEZ SPRINGS (KRQE) – Yes, cattle wranglers can still find work in New Mexico. Right now, the National Park Service is looking for someone to wrangle trespassing cattle in the Valles Caldera.

The job posting is for a horse-mounted cattle wrangler for the summer and fall of 2024. The wrangler is tasked with rounding up loose cattle within the Valles Caldera site. After corralling the cattle, they will notify law enforcement.

“This is an important service to protect park resources from any damage from trespass cattle,” Valles Caldera Superintendent Jorge Silva-Bañuelos said in a press release. “Along with continuing to work with the USDA Forest Service on adjacent grazing allotment fence repairs and establishing a virtual fence system, having consistent trespass cattle round-ups to minimize resource impacts will allow us to meet our obligation of preserving and protecting this special public space for everyone to enjoy.”
