Pete Murray’s Stolen Guitar Returned After 18 Years

Pete Murray has been reunited with his trusty acoustic guitar after 18 years.

Taking to TikTok on Saturday (6 April) after performing at the Roche Estate in the Hunter Valley as part of the Red Hot Summer Tour, Murray revealed that the guitar was stolen 18 years earlier and was finally returned by the woman whose partner stole it.

Opening the guitar case to showcase an instrument that’s certainly seen better days, Murray discovered that the “old workhorse” had been sitting in the case the whole time.

“I was very grateful that she brought it back,” Murray said. “I think her partner spent some time in jail, probably deserved to be in jail by the sounds of what he’s been up to… everything, in this case, is still as it was 18 years ago,” he exclaimed, taking out packs of guitar strings.

Telling the story of how the guitar was returned to him, Murray explained that the woman had to steal the guitar from her ex and wanted to give it back to the singer-songwriter, who’s “rapt” by the reunion.

“That doesn’t happen very often, 18 years,” he continued. “It needs a little bit of love and tenderness right now, but that’s pretty special. So, thank you to that lovely lady who got in touch.

“I know it was probably a scary thing for you, thinking that I might be pretty peeved off about it… I know you were nervous I’d maybe have the police there and arrest you for stealing… that didn’t happen; I gave you a hug, so thank you very much.”

In October, Murray revealed that he was getting to work on recording new music.

With tracks from Feeler to Always A Winner, it’s the greatest hits guaranteed to please. You can purchase the Best Of compilation on CD or vinyl here.
