Haddon Avenue STEAM Academy and Magnet elementary school in Pacoima recently received upgrades to its mariachi classroom and program, and Los Angeles Unified School District officials were there Tuesday, April 2, to celebrate.
The northeast San Fernando Valley school received new instruments, uniforms and equipment for its popular mariachi program, which this year has about 30 students participating, according to a district spokesperson. In addition, the mariachi classroom received a makeover that included new computers, furniture, a mural encouraging students to read and soundproofing.
The enhancements were funded through nearly $50,000 in donations from the College Football Playoff Foundation and School Specialty as part of a mission to uplift schools by investing in educational resources.
Among those who attended Tuesday’s celebration were Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and LAUSD Board of Education member Kelly Gonez, as well as representatives from the College Football Playoff Foundation and from School Specialty.
“Thrilled to unveil the transformed Mariachi classroom,” Gonez wrote in a post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. She ended her post with the hashtag “#CommunityPride.”
