Rio Rancho City Council approves changes to noise ordinance

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – The Rio Rancho City Council has signed off on sweeping changes to its noise ordinance. The new ordinance replaces vague language with more specific limits like allowable decibel levels and designated times.

Several spoke up in support of the changes at Thursday night’s council meeting including Rio Rancho Police Chief Stewart Steele who said the old system made it hard to cite residents. “Having something written in stone that gives us the teeth to actually enforce and the guidance for our officers means the world to me and it makes our job just a little bit easier,” said Chief Steele.

The council did approve some amendments to the ordinance including extending permissible noise levels over the weekend and pushing back the start date until July 1.
