Sebastian Stan Races for Cannes as Romanian Actor Portrays Donald Trump

Romanian-born actor Sebastian Stan entered the race for the grand prize of the Cannes Film Festival. Born in Constanta, the actor now has an impressive career and plays Donald Trump in the movie “The Apprentice”. 

Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival next month, the biographical drama also stars Jeremy Strong as controversial lawyer and politician Roy Cohn. The image shows the actors in the back of the car, both looking solemn, with Sebastian Stan playing the young Trump, according to ew.com.

Described as a “dive into the underbelly of the American empire,” the film will explore Donald Trump’s career as a New York real estate mogul in the 70s and 80s. The official synopsis reads: “In this film, he will play an important role: “It features young Donald Trump’s rise to power through a Faustian deal with influential right-wing lawyer and political fixer Roy Cohn””.

The cast also includes Borat’s Maria Bakalova as Ivana Trump and Martin Donovan as Fred Trump Sr. This Ali Abbasi-directed feature, announced Thursday in the official competition of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, depicts Donald Trump’s rise to power through what has been described as a “Faustian pact” made with influential far-right lawyer and political middleman Roy Cohn, played by actor Jeremy Strong.

The film in which the Romanian actor from Constanța appears in the main role, was selected to compete for the coveted Palme D’or, along with 18 other films. Among them, a feature film in which the director Francis Ford Coppola invested a huge amount.

It is not the first time that Sebastian Stan embodies a controversial character. He played Tommy Lee, Mötley Crüe’s drummer and Pamela Anderson’s ex-husband, on “Pam & Tommy,” which earned him an Emmy nomination last year. Sebastian Stan was born in Constanta, southeastern Romania, in 1982, but left the country with his mom from an early age.

At the age of eight, Stan and his mother, Georgeta Orlovschi, moved to Vienna, Austria, right after the Romanian anti-communist revolution, where Georgeta was employed as a pianist. Four years later, they moved to New York in Rockland County.

He was accepted to and attended Rutgers University’s Mason Gross school of Arts, which also gave him the opportunity to spend a year abroad studying acting at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre London, England. Stan became a United States citizen in 2002.
