Southland crime: Carjacking in Lansing, arson in Oak Lawn, and more

The following items were taken from police and court reports and news releases. An arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt.

Bridgeview

ILLEGAL GUNS: Saul Hernandez, 21, 7700 block of Harlem Avenue, Bridgeview, was arrested March 27 after investigators executing a search warrant recovered a 12-gauge shotgun, five handguns, 157 grams of suspected cocaine, 5,152 grams of cannabis, 19 grams of suspected MDMA , 1,083 grams of THC oils, 757 grams of THC gummies, 770 grams of packaged suspected psilocybin “magic mushroom” bars and more than $17,600 cash, according to Cook County sheriff’s police. Hernandez is charged with seven counts of delivery of a controlled substance and one count each of armed violence, violating conditional release with a firearm, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, possession of MDMA with intent to deliver, and possession of psilocybin with intent to deliver, sheriff’s police said.

Evergreen Park

GUN IN TRUCK: Namibia R. Hodges, 31, Willowbrook, was arrested and accused of unlawful use of a weapon March 17 after officers recovered a loaded 9 mm handgun from a bag on the passenger seat of the truck he was driving at 99th Street and Western Avenue, police said.

AGGRAVATED BATTERY: Makahlad D. James, 23, Chicago, was arrested and accused of aggravated battery March 20 at Walmart, 2500 95th St., after elbowing a security officer in the chest while being asked to leave, police said.

ARMED ROBBERY: A masked man fled Walgreens, 3959 95th St., March 20 on foot with the cash register after displaying the butt of a handgun and demanding the register, police said.

AGGRAVATED ASSAULT: Two males pointed a handgun at the driver of a car they were walking in front of March 21 in the 9800 block of Harding Avenue, police said.

Homewood

SHOTS FIRED: A Sunday evening disturbance at a home in the 18100 block of Center Avenue led to shots being fired, but no one injured, police said. The shooter or shooters fled before officers arrived at 8:08 p.m., police said.

Lansing

CARJACKING: A resident of the 3500 block of Bernice Road told police she was backing into a parking space outside her apartment building at 12:27 a.m. March 22 when a vehicle containing several people pulled up in front, blocking her car. A male exited the other vehicle and demanded her vehicle, she said. Investigators were unable to track the vehicle with her cellphone, which was left inside, police said.

Oak Lawn

STORE BURGLARY: Security video shows two masked individuals prying open the rear door of Luv 2 Smoke, 9600 Cicero Ave., entering and taking two cash register drawers, cash from a safe and unsold lottery tickets during an early morning March 22 burglary, police said.

ARSON SUSPECTED: An early morning March 24 fire on the third floor of one of two “twin” office facilities catering to doctors and dentists is being investigated as arson, police said. Fire Department investigators entered the structure at 4550 103rd St. at about 4:50 a.m. and saw shattered glass and a large rock on the first floor, with desks and chairs overturned in an office, police said.

Orland Park

AGGRAVATED DUI: A Griffith, Indiana man was charged with aggravated drunken driving during a March 27 traffic stop at 159th Street and Orlan Brook Drive after an officer determined his license had been revoked for drunken driving, police said. Alexander R. Rodriguez, 36, was also cited for driving on a license that was revoked in Illinois and suspended in Indiana, police said.

Park Forest

WINNINGS THEFT: A homeless man who left 7-Eleven, 425 Sauk Trail, March 21 with another person’s video gambling machine winnings has been charged with theft of misplaced property, police said. Michael E. Polka, 56, obtained the payoff ticket from a machine that had automatically shut down the previous night before the actual winner could obtain his $264 ticket, police said. Officers recovered $163 from Polka when they approached him at a nearby pizza restaurant four hours later, police said.

Steger

AGGRAVATED ASSAULT: A Lynwood man who backed a borrowed car into a squad car in November 2022, accelerated forward toward an officer and then eluded officers in a high-speed chase was taken into custody March 22, police said. Jermaine Bivens Jr., 27, 300 block of Linda Lane, is charged with aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, maliciously causing more than $500 damage to government property, two misdemeanors and a moving violation, according to Will County court information online.

Tinley Park

ILLEGAL IMAGE: A Tinley Park man accused of sending nude images of a social media influencer to two of her followers has been charged with nonconsensual dissemination of a sexual image, according to police and Will County court records online. Kendall K. Pollard, 29, 7400 block of Ridgefield Lane, is scheduled to be arraigned May 6 on the charge. The victim/complainant learned the image was being dissemination when two followers provided screen shots of images sent to their social media accounts via direct messaging, police said.
