As mentioned above, a potential Space Mountain film has been in development at Disney for a long time. Max Landis penned a script about the attraction, and Walt Disney Pictures reportedly acquired it in 2012. However, the project ultimately fell apart after Disney purchased Lucasfilm and got access to Star Wars, the quintessential sci-fi franchise.

As the Space Mountain attraction doesn’t have a specific narrative or important characters, it has given screenwriters freedom to be creative with it. In Landis’ script, Space Mountain takes place in a ’50s retro version of the future.

In October 2020, a new family-friendly version of the project officially went into development, and Joby Harold joined the production as a writer and producer. Disney also announced that Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures will serve as producer alongside Rideback’s Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich. It was revealed in April 2024 that Appelbaum And Andre Nemec (Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop) had become involved with the Space Mountain Movie as screenwriters. Disney is yet to announce whether they have settled on a director for the film.

Given how things stand now, it’s unlikely that the Space Mountain Movie will go into production this year. A film like this will also require a lengthy post-production. So, if the filming begins in 2025, the Space Mountain Movie can premiere in 2026 at the earliest.
