Enrollment is open at 23 Lake County sites for a $1.1 million state-funded summer program to boost student reading and math skills.
The program can accommodate about 750 students. The Urban League of Northwest Indiana and DHB & Associates, a local education consulting company, are the grant recipients and will oversee the program.
The program is open to traditional public school students in Gary and Lake Ridge schools, charter schools, private schools and home-schooled children.
It will run weekdays beginning June 10 and concludes July 12. All sites will serve breakfast, lunch and snacks.
Participation is free for students entering grades 1-9 in August.
“The opening of student enrollment was one of the milestones that we were excited to meet,” said Vanessa Allen-McCloud, president and CEO of the Urban League.
DHB & Associates authored the Indiana Department of Education grant application and serves as Northwest Indiana Learning Labs anchor partner.
“This grant will change the game when it comes to summer educational programming in the communities we serve,” said Deborah Black of DHB & Associates. “We are engaging a diverse group of talented professionals who are eager to share their expertise and make this summer unforgettable.”
A state release said the Expanding What Works grant represents a new opportunity, aimed at increasing access to a high-quality summer program, for more than 3,000 Indiana students.
Students who participate will receive in-person math and reading instruction each day from licensed teachers. Sites will also provide fun enrichment activities, such arts, STEM activities, workshops and more.
