The heat is on before a storm arrives later this week

Today is going to be the warmest day of the week for most of the state, with temperatures 5-15° above average for late April. A weak backdoor front is keeping temperatures slightly cooler across far northeastern New Mexico, which may spark up an isolated shower this afternoon but it won’t be heavy or widespread. The rest of the state will be dry and calm. Above average temperatures and calm winds will stick around tomorrow before a storm arrives later this week.

Winds will ramp up Thursday as a storm approaches the state, bringing strong upper level winds overhead. The upper level winds will translate down to the surface, bringing gusts 40-60+ mph across the state. This will lead to areas of blowing dust across southern and eastern New Mexico along with elevated fire danger. Light snow flurries over the mountain peaks and rain showers are possible across northern and western New Mexico, but it won’t be anything too impressive. Winds will be the biggest issue Thursday, with a cold front cooling down highs across the west.

The entire state will feel cooler temperatures into Friday as the first storm slowly departs. Although it won’t be as windy as Thursday, there will still be gusts up to 50 mph. Another storm arrives Saturday, bringing mountain snow and low elevation showers/storms across northern, western, and central parts of the state. Winds will pick up slightly, gusting up to 55 mph. Highs will continue to cool into Saturday afternoon with more cloud coverage and precipitation. Drier and warmer weather will arrive starting Sunday into early next week.
