triple j have announced the next iteration of the iconic One Night Stand concert series, marking its return to the calendar for the first time in five years.
The mighty comeback was announced live on the air this evening (April 8), courtesy of Drive hosts Abby Butler and Tyrone Pynor.
As for when and where it’ll happen, that’s yet to be decided: the One Night Stand is typically held in a regional town decided on by triple j listeners, and this year’s edition will be no different. Punters in spots outside the metropolitan cities are encouraged to pitch their own towns as potential hosts, with an official form asking nominators to explain “why hosting the One Night Stand will make a difference in your community”.
Notably, 2024 will also mark the 20th anniversary of the One Night Stand, having first debuted in Natimuk, Victoria in July of 2004 (with a bill sporting the likes of Grinspoon, The Dissociatives and Eskimo Joe). The concert returned for another gig in a new city every year until 2020 (with the sole exception being in 2015), when a planned event was scrapped due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The most recent edition was held in Lucindale, South Australia in September of 2019, with a line-up featuring Hilltop Hoods, Meg Mac, Ocean Alley, G Flip and Chelsea Manor.
Announcing the series’ return for 2024, David Anderson – Managing Director of the ABC – said in a press release: “The ABC is one of the biggest supporters of Australian music and live performance. At a time when the local music industry needs support, the ABC is thrilled to come to the party with the return of triple j’s One Night Stand.”
Anderson went on to note that he and his team “recognise the festival landscape in Australia has changed since we last put on a One Night Stand”, and will be working closely with the two organisations onboard to co-present the show – music charity Support Act and government body Music Australia – to figure out “how best we can use this event to increase much needed investment in the Australian music industry, while staying true to One Night Stand’s core mission of delivering a one-of-a-kind event, accessible to the public, based in regional Australia”.
In a statement of his own, Lachlan Macara – head of triple j, Double J and ABC Country – said of this year’s One Night Stand: “We’re beyond stoked to be bringing back triple j’s One Night Stand in 2024 to continue our support of Australian artists and provide an opportunity for young people in the regions to get around some live music.
“We’re busy working on an incredible lineup sure to create another One Night Stand for the history books and we can’t wait to see where we’ll be heading in 2024.”
Also adding to the sentiment was Millie Millgate, Director of Music Australia, who said: “Music Australia is excited to support the return of triple j’s One Night Stand – a trusted platform that builds the profile of Australian artists and supports engagement in regional communities. We see opportunity to further amplify the partnership and invest in local communities with the introduction of place-based capacity building and skills development initiatives.”
