Two porcupines released back into the Bosque after months of rehabilitation

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Two porcupines were recently returned to the Bosque after spending time in rehabilitation at the New Mexico Wildlife Center.

In May of 2023, rehabilitation manager Stephanie Lindsell began working with a baby porcupine who had been found hurt in the Bosque in Bernalillo. She says the porcupine had been attacked by a dog. Two months later, the wildlife center says a female porcupine was found wondering around the Albuquerque Bosque and brought into their care.

After months of rehabilitation, both porcupines, now almost a year old, were released back into the Bosque. The center kept the pair together, so neither had to go back into the wild alone. “It was beneficial for both of them as far as their mental health and their ability to interact appropriately with their own species,” Lindsell said.

The wildlife center says if you notice an injured animal in the Bosque, do not try to rehabilitate it yourself. Instead, they said to contact a local rehabilitator for help.
