The Universal Day of Culture is the result of an international pact to ratify the legal recognition of the conservation of cultural objects and works of art. The document was drafted by Nicholas Roerich in an effort to protect cultural and scientific works from destruction in armed conflicts.
The Roerich Pact was first proposed in 1931 and ratified on April 15, 1935, by the United States in Washington. Throughout the 20th century, many efforts were made to make this date one of the most significant international holidays. The Peace Flag, which accompanies every celebration of this special day around the world, is recognized as a symbol of the pact.
