Their association with the team reportedly began with another close friend, Humphrey Ker, a British comedy writer and actor.
As reported by The Independent, the beginnings of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s association can be traced back to 2020 during the pandemic when McElhenney was recommended to watch the documentary Sunderland Til I Die by Humphrey Ker, who had worked with him on Mythic Quest to gain a better understanding of football.
McElhenney eventually binged two series of Sunderland Til I Die and got heavily interested in making his own documentary with his own football club. He then contacted Humphrey Ker, who began scouring the web for potential football clubs for McElhenney to own, not long after.
To aid funding, McElhenney reached out to Ryan Reynolds and together the duo bought Wrexham after Reynolds reportedly expressed his wishes to buy the team instead of sponsoring it.
