AtlasIntel poll: Who would Romanians vote for in the presidential election?

According to the latest survey carried out by AtlasIntel, exclusively for Digi24, the best ranked possible candidate in the presidential elections would be Mircea Geoană. It would rank first in all measured scenarios. Geoana is followed by George Simion, Cătălin Drula and Diana Soșoacă. The leaders of the Coalition, Marcel Ciolacu and Nicolae Ciucă would get less than 10% of the votes.

Sociological research was carried out on three scenarios. One in which the leaders of the PSD-PNL coalition, Nicolae Ciucă and Marcel Ciolacu, are not measured, a scenario in which only Marcel Ciolacu is measured, and a third scenario in which Nicolae Ciucă is also measured.

In the first scenario, in which those from AtlasIntel did not also measure Marcel Cioalcu and Nicolae Ciucă, the current deputy general secretary of NATO, Mircea Geoană, would be in first place. He would enter the second round with AUR candidate George Simion. If only valid votes are taken into account, Mircea Geoană’s result increases to 44.7%.

In the second scenario, with Ciuca and Ciolacu, PSD leader Marcel Ciolacu would get only 9.6% in the presidential elections, and if only valid votes were counted, his result would be 11.3%. While Nicolae Ciucă gets 5% and 6.2%, respectively. Taking all voters in account, Mircea Geoana would obtain 27% and if only valid votes are considered, Geoana would get 32.7%.

A third scenario is the one in which PSD leader Marcel Ciolacu is measured, but Nicolae Ciucă is not measured either. In this scenario, the score of Cătălin Drula increases, who would enter the second round alongside Mircea Geoană. Also, Marcel Ciolacu’s score drops.

Voting intention for presidential elections is accompanied by demographic data that show the characteristics of each possible candidate’s electorate. These data show that the vast majority of those who canceled their vote in the 2019 presidential elections would vote for Mircea Geoană this time. He gathers votes, almost equally from PSD, PNL and USR voters.

George Simion would have voted more than those who chose Viorica Dăncilă in 2019.

The social democratic leader, Marcel Ciolacu, is preferred by the PSD electorate, but he would gather almost no votes from the PNL electorate, while Nicolae Ciucă, paradoxically, would gather more votes from those who voted with the PSD in the 2020 parliamentary elections than from those who chose PNL.

The AtlasIntel survey also presents the opinion of Romanians in relation to the current performance of President Klaus Iohannis, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu and the Government of Romania. Also, trust in several political figures is measured.

60% of the respondents disapproved the activity of President Iohannis, while 32% approved it. 55% disapproved PM Ciolacu’s performance and 30% approved it. 58% disapproved the performance of the entire Cabinet, while 28% approved it.

On the image of political leaders, Mircea Geoana gathered the most positive reactions, 56%, Laura Codruta Kovesi ranks second, with 45%, Klaus Iohannis third with 37% and former President Traian Basescu comes next with 34%. Dacian Ciolos is fifth with 32% and right behind him is Diana Sosoaca with 31%.
