10 people injured, 1 critically, after tram crashes into railing at Universal Studios Hollywood

A Saturday night at Universal Studios Hollywood took a frightening turn late Saturday evening when a studio backlot tour tram crashed into a railing, authorities said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Los Angeles County Fire Department were called to the scene at around 9 p.m. on Saturday.

A four-car tram, used for the theme park’s studio backlot tours, crashed into a railing after experiencing an issue with its brakes, said LASD Lt.  Maria Abal.

Ten people were injured, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, including one person with critical injuries.

Four people were transported to hospitals with minor to moderate injuries, according to Abal.

It’s unclear exactly what happened to the tram’s brakes, or if operations at the theme park were affected. Universal Studios officials could not immediately be reached for comment on Saturday.
