Albuquerque reminding pet owners to keep animals safe on July 4th

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – As the fireworks begin for the Fourth of July, remember that many pets might be stressed by the loud noises and lights. To help, the City of Albuquerque is sharing a few tips for keeping pets safe.

The city’s Animal Welfare Department says pet owner should:

Leave your pets at home and indoors. The noise of the fireworks for most pets could cause anxiety, fear and a desire to flee.

Keep pets in a lit, cool, calm closed room with familiar sounds and chew toys that will help to distract and make the animal feel safe.

Identification tags and microchips are a must in case the pet escapes. This will help to reunite the pets and the owners quickly and effectively. Please make sure information on tags and microchips are updated. Free microchipping and custom pet tags are available to residents of Albuquerque, until Wednesday, July 3, at the Eastside and Westside shelters.

If the pet gets especially stressed, ask your vet for help to calm your pet down.

Loud noises can scare pets away from the home. If your cat or dog gets lost during the holiday, the city’s Animal Welfare Department will try to expedite the process of returning your pet – you can find contact info and more information at this link.
