Baby Reindeer: Is Fiona Harvey ‘Martha,’ Richard Gadd’s Stalker?

Baby Reindeer, a mini-series about a man who is stalked by a woman named Martha, is a big hit on Netflix. The series is based on a true story, and we know the main character, Donny, is based on the life of the man who plays him in the series, Richard Gadd. However, Martha’s real-life identity is a mystery, though fans theorize Gadd’s stalker is based on a woman named Fiona Harvey.

Is Martha from Baby Reindeer’s real name Fiona Harvey?

Richard Gadd hasn’t revealed Martha’s real-life name. However, fans have found tweets to Gadd from 2014 from an account named Fiona Harvey. In particular, one tweet echoes a line that’s repeated in Baby Reindeer several times:

“@MrRichardGadd my curtains need hung badly”

The account also writes in the distinct style used by Martha in the show.

However, she may have gone under the name Fiona Muir at some point. Unlike the US, a person’s criminal history isn’t public record in the UK, so finding official documentation isn’t possible. However, we did locate an article that was initially printed in Glasgow, Scotland’s Sunday Mail in 2000 detailing a case in which a woman named Fiona Muir stalked an MP, Jimmy Wray, and his lawyer wife, Laura Wray after Laura fired her from a trainee position at her law firm.

The behavior in the article is very similar to that shown by Martha in Baby Reindeer. It also indicates that this wasn’t the first time she became fixated on someone and targeted them for harassment.

What connects Fiona Muir with Fiona Harvey is a second article, published in 2004 in Glasgow’s Daily Record. In it, Jimmy Wray recounts his experience with a stroke and the hardships he’s faced in the past. One of these hardships was “the legal restraining order they had to take out against Fiona Harvey, a former employee of Laura’s who stalked her.” So, sometime between 2000 and 2004, Fiona’s last name changed from Muir to Harvey.

Another similarity between Fiona and Martha’s histories is that the Wrays also have a son living with a disability. In Baby Reindeer, it’s revealed that Martha was previously arrested for stalking a couple whose son is deaf. In real life, Fiona stalked a couple whose son has Dyspraxia.

Despite the similarities, it’s important to note that we have no way to confirm a connection between Fiona and Martha. Gadd stated (in an interview with GQ) that he has no wish to publicize Martha’s true identity and that changes had been made to her character to protect her.
