That task will take a small but mighty northern new Mexican girl named Greñuda on an animated adventure with her friends. “We want to bring her to life and all her fantasy world and highlight New Mexican culture in a fairy tale fashion,” said Carlos Meyer, co-creator of Gato in a Tree: A Greñuda Story.

The story takes place in the 1940s. The main character Greñuda is based off the characteristics of their mom. This isn’t the first time the Meyer brothers have highlighted their New Mexican culture.

Back in 2019, they turned to the public to help fund a graphic novel Under the Cottonwood Tree that received several awards. Now, they have ventured into the world of animation with Gato in a Tree: A Greñuda Story on Film. “We were talking to one particular studio sound like we are going to get a green light but at the very end, they said it was too similar to something else they had lined up,” said Paul Meyer.

That left them with a decision to drop the idea or look for funds now they turn to the public once again for help. They went back to Kickstarter to raise $16,500 to help pay the voice actors and the illustrator. “Other people are telling us you will never be able to afford to do this and I thought no, we have done the book, we can do the animation as well,” said Paul Meyer.

They have 28 days to raise the funds and say they plan to show the seven-minute short in different film festivals by the Spring of 2025. Anyone who donates will get a preview of it.

They say they hope to get Greñuda Adventure made into a featured film. They are also still looking to get someone to voice the main character Greñuda
