Central Ave. bridge designated as historic landmark

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Albuquerque City Council has voted to designate a new city landmark. The Central Avenue Bridge crossing, near Tingley Drive and Sunset Road now joins 23 other city landmarks after city leaders brought the proposal to city council.

“The Central Avenue Bridge crossing site has been important for hundreds of years,” Albuquerque Planning Department Director Alan Varela said in a press release. “This designation will help preserve and protect it indefinitely into the future. We are very happy to see that its significance has been recognized officially.”

The bridge is part of the development of historic Route 66 and Albuquerque. It was constructed in 1930, and allowed Albuquerque to expand west of the Rio Grande, the city says. The construction of the bridge also helped shift route 66 to an east-to-west alignment, instead of running through the city from north to south. Now, with the new designation as a city landmark, the site will get ongoing preservation from the city’s Landmarks Commission.
