Cicadas to be in spotlight during program in St. Charles

The St. Charles Public Library will present “Cicadas: A Periodic Phenomenon” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, in the Carnegie Community Room at the library, 1 S. Sixth St. in St. Charles.

In 2024, three periodical cicada broods will emerge in Illinois, with their noise and numbers making it a memorable May, event organizers said.

At the program at the library, participants will learn more about the insects from University of Illinois Horticulture Educator Jamie Viebach, including what effect they will have on plants and our lifestyle.

Cicadas are harmless to humans and pets, and they have evolved alongside trees for millions of years, forming a crucial part of the ecosystem’s balance, according to library officials.
