Death of teen struck by Metrolink near Covina ruled accident

The medical examiner’s office has ruled the death of a San Dimas teen hit by a Metrolink train last week near Covina as an accident.

Diego Ciardullo, 17, died March 28 from traumatic injuries, three days after the collision in the 1900 block of Covina Boulevard.

The California Highway Patrol is trying to determine if the headphones he was wearing made him inattentive, said Officer Joseph Davila, a spokesman for the CHP.

The accident happened in an unincorporated county area as Ciardullo headed east on Covina Boulevard and walked into the side of the moving train, Davila said.

The teen was walking home from school that Monday, family friend Jenna Crofts said. A GoFundMe created by Crofts had raised $28,326 as of Thursday morning.
