Ego: The Michael Gudinski Story, the documentary feature film on the late, great Australian music mogul, will hit TV screens next week.
The Australian television premiere airs at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, 9 April, on Channel 7 and 7plus. Check out the star-studded trailer below.
The documentary follows Gudinski, a maverick entrepreneur and trailblazer in the Australian music industry. It tracks his 50-year musical career, including the launch of Mushroom Group at age 19 and later, co-founding Frontier Touring.

At Mushroom, Gudinski signed and nurtured the careers of Skyhooks, Split Enz, Kylie Minogue, Yothu Yindi, Jimmy Barnes, Archie Roach, The Temper Trap, Paul Kelly and Hunters & Collectors. As a tour promoter, Gudinski was instrumental in bringing out Bruce Springsteen, Ed Sheeran, Sting and Foo Fighters, to name a few.
Directed by ARIA and AACTA Award winner Paul Goldman and produced by Bethany Jones, Ego features a vast roster of stars.
The documentary stars a who’s who of the music industry, including Gudinski and his family, as well as the artists whose early careers were helped by the man himself, such as Jimmy Barnes, Vika & Linda Bull, Garbage, Dave Grohl, Paul Kelly, Kylie Minogue, Mark Seymour, Ed Sheeran, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, and more.
It’s described as the definitive Michael Gudinski story – following a journey through an all-too-rare behind-the-scenes look at Mushroom Group and how that seminal independent music company shaped a cultural movement and soundtrack for a nation.
A press release described the documentary’s story as “the successes and failures that made the Mushroom Empire. The legacy is profound, and all captured in Ego: The Michael Gudinski Story.”
Michael Gudinski passed away in March 2021 at the age of 68.
Gudinski was revealed as the most influential figure in the Australian music industry in the 2019 Power 50. In September 2020, The Music sat down with the Victorian-born businessman on the back of the hugely successful Music From The Home Front TV concert series, which he called “a dream come true”, and to discuss the future of Australian music talent during the COVID pandemic.
