Former Marmion Academy teacher pleads guilty to aggravated battery

A former teacher at Marmion Academy in Aurora has pleaded guilty to felony aggravated battery, officials announced on Wednesday.

Joseph Charron, 68, agreed to a sentence of 30 months’ probation and 180 days of imprisonment in exchange for the guilty plea, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s office.

Officials said in the release that Charron will receive credit for 695 days of home confinement, where he had been held since May 2022.

In court, Kane County prosecutors said that Charron made insulting and provoking physical contacts with one of his students at Marmion Academy when the student was between the ages of 15 and 17, according to the news release. Charron was the student’s teacher and a monk at Marmion Abbey, officials said in the release.

The student and his parents also gave statements to Kane County Judge Julie Yetter about Charron’s treatment of the student, according to the news release.

Marmion Academy is an all-boys, nonprofit Catholic high school in Aurora.

As terms of his probation, Charron must complete the recommendations of a sex offender evaluation, must have no contact with the student, must be supervised when making contact with minors under 18 years old and must comply with a Civil No Contact Order, according to the release.

Officials said that, at the time of sentencing, Charron has paid over $35,000 in restitution and still has almost $2,800 in fines, fees and assessments to pay.

Charron is currently living in Wisconsin with the permission of the court, and he may continue to live in another state upon approval of the Interstate Compact Commission, according to the release.
