Hobart man who shot at wife in driveway arrested in El Paso: police

Hobart Police said a man charged with shooting at his estranged wife as she ran down a driveway was arrested Tuesday in El Paso, Texas.

Ariel Ginjauma, Jr., a.k.a. Ariel Gomez, 45, was charged Nov. 15 with 10 felonies, including two counts of attempted murder, both Level 1 felonies.

He was also charged with two counts each of attempted aggravated battery, intimidation, one count each of criminal recklessness, domestic battery, resisting law enforcement and possession of cocaine.

A judge issued an arrest warrant on Nov. 30 when he skipped court. He is awaiting extradition to Lake County and faces decades behind bars.

The shooting happened the same day that his wife Evelyn Ginjauma was acquitted in Lake Superior Court for stabbing a woman, Ariel’s business acquaintance, in their basement in December 2022. He testified at the trial.

Hobart Police responded at 4:25 p.m. Nov. 14 to a home on Lake View Drive.

Evelyn had just arrived home from court, when she heard “loud, aggressive banging” on the door. She assumed Ariel was there to drop off their 3-year-old son. They were supposed to meet at the police station to drop off the boy.

When she opened the door, Ariel grabbed her arm, pushed her to the kitchen. He pulled out a gun and pointed it at the teen girl, who had come out of her bedroom to see what was going on.

He fired a shot that hit a closet door. Evelyn ran to the kitchen and called 911. He chased Evelyn outside, firing a shot. The magazine fell out. He went back to get it, before shooting at her, as she screams, at least four more times.

“Come here,” he said, during the shooting.

The U.S. Marshals’ Lone Star Fugitive Task Force and U.S. Marshals’ Great Lakes Regional Task Force assisted in the El Paso arrest.

He’s also facing a misdemeanor invasion of privacy case in Porter County for allegedly texting Evelyn after she filed for a protective order.
