New Mexico Medicaid now covering Opill oral contraceptive

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – Medicaid users in New Mexico can now receive Opill, an over-the-counter oral contraceptive. The approval is part of an effort to expand pregnancy and contraceptive care, the New Mexico Human Services Department says.

“We are dedicated to ensuring access to health care for all Medicaid customers,” Alanna Dancis, chief medical officer for the New Mexico Medicaid program, said in a press release. “The coverage of Opill is a step forward in empowering people with more choices in their reproductive health care — we encourage our customers and pharmacists to familiarize themselves with this new coverage option.”

Medicaid customers can get the contraceptive at no-cost, the state says. Customers just need to ask for the drug at the pharmacy counter.

Medicaid in New Mexico also offers no-cost pregnancy tests and emergency contraception. There is also a hotline (1-833-796-8773) for reproductive healthcare questions and help.
