ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – After announcing the closure of one portion of trails, Petroglyphs National Monument is opening a new trail area. The site offers day-use hiking and will open to the public on May 3.

The National Park Service (NPS) is opening the South Point Day Use Area. The trailhead gives new access to the southernmost portion of the volcanic escarpment, the NPS says.

Over the next few months, NPS will add signs, trash cans, bicycle racks, a shade structure, and benches. There is no water at the trailhead.

There will be an opening ceremony from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4. On those days, NPS will offer one-mile guided hikes at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. There will also be Junior Ranger and Senior Ranger activities as well as dog-friendly activities.

While a new area is opening, earlier this month, NPS announced they were closing some portions of Mesa Point Trail. The decision came as a response to vandalism and unauthorized rock stacking, NPS says.
