Supreme Court Overturns Electoral Bureau’s Rejection of United Right Alliance

The High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ) on Tuesday admitted the appeal filed by the United Right Alliance (USR, PMP, Forța Dreptei) against the decision of the Central Electoral Bureau to reject its founding protocol. Thus, USR, Forța Dreptei and PMP can participate in the elections together.

The ruling of the High Court is final.

Through the decision taken on Tuesday, the High Court of Cassation and Justice annulled Sunday’s decision of the Central Electrical Bureau by which the protocol for the establishment of the electoral alliance “Dreapta Unită USR – PMP – Forța Dreptei” was rejected.

“Admits the appeal filed by the appellants Union Save Romania Party, Popular Movement Party and Forza Dretei Party against the Decision of the Central Electoral Bureau no. 1/D/17.03.2024, as directed by the Decision of the Central Electoral Bureau no. 1/D/18.03.2024. Cancel the Decision of the Central Electoral Office no. 1/D/17.03.2024, as directed by the Decision of the Central Electoral Bureau no. 1/D/18.03.2024. Admits the Protocol establishing the electoral alliance – “Alianța Dreapta Ună USR-PMP-Forța Dreptei” – is the minute of the decision of the supreme court.

The leaders of the alliance reacted quickly, with a press release in which they say that “they defeated freedom of association and democracy”, so the High Court of Cassation and Justice admitted the challenge of the United Right, annulled the anti-democratic decision of the Central Electoral Bureau and admitted the protocol for establishing the electoral alliance formed by USR, PMP and Forța Dreptei.

Therefore, the United Right will be on the ballot on June 9, when the European and local elections take place.

“The ICCJ proved us right and found that the decision of the BEC to reject the registration of the protocol of the United Right alliance is an abuse, a direct attack on democracy in Romania, an attempt to prevent the opposition from participating in the elections. No matter how desperate the Iohannis regime is, the laws are clear. The ICCJ decided correctly, just as it did in 2019, when Dragnea and PSD wanted to remove USR from the ballot. It didn’t work for them then, it didn’t work for them now either. See you at the vote, on June 9″, states USR president Cătălin Drula.

I’m glad they defeated freedom of association and democracy. All is not lost in Romania, we have the right to go to the Romanians and ask for their trust on June 9. The United Right returned to the ballot, after the PSD tried to eliminate us”, said the PMP president, Eugen Tomac.
