The Most Absurd Reasons Romanians Dial 112 Emergency Line

Ghosts in the yard, a nail pain, congested traffic or insomnia – these are just some of the incredible reasons why Romanians called 112 in 2023. And it’s not just a few absurd calls, but five million, which is half of all recorded calls last year.

Half of the calls to the emergency number 112 recorded last year were false alarms.

In a list of the absurd reasons why Romanians called the emergency service, we find traffic congestion – those who couldn’t get to the airport because of traffic. Others called just out of curiosity, to see if anyone answered, and another reason is that they had no power.

Romanians also called 112 and said they saw ghosts in the yard, and some of them because they ran out of taxi money and needed to get home.

Insomnia is another reason why Romanians called the emergency service or because they ran out of sugar in the store. Headaches or the presence of aliens on Earth prompted some of them to call 112.

Another very common reason is that people want to swear at someone and call the operators.

There were 10 million calls overall last year, and half of them were not an emergency.

The counties where there were the most unjustified calls to the emergency service are: Gorj – 66%, Argeș – 59% and Covasna – 63%. At the opposite pole with the fewest unjustified calls to 112 are Bucharest and Ilfov.
