Valles Caldera offering summer outdoor programs

JEMEZ SPRINGS (KRQE) – As the weather warms, the Valles Caldera National Preserve is offering a range of outdoor activities for visitors. In addition to offering hiking and fishing, the site is also planning ranger-led activities.

“This is our most exciting program season to date,” Park Superintendent Jorge Silva-Bañuelos said in a press release. “We hope everyone who visits the park this summer will join one of these ranger-guided programs to gain a better appreciation of Valles Caldera.”


Valles Caldera visitor data shows busiest months

“Art in the Park Day” will happen on Sunday, April 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Throughout the Valle Grande, plein air painters will be working on landscape paintings. At 10:00 a.m., there will be a landscape photography workshop, a haiku poetry event at 11:00 a.m., and a ranger-led craft at 1:00 p.m.

In June, July, and August, the Valles Caldera National Preserve will host several fly-fishing clinics. Those will be on June 1, June 29, July 20, and August 17. Pre-registration is required and will open several weeks ahead of each clinic. There will also be fly tying lessons on June 15, July 13, August 10, and September 7.

On June 2, July 28, August 18, and September 1, park rangers will offer a “leisurely stroll” to let visitors enjoy nature journaling. The exact time and meeting location will be chosen as the event approaches (check this link for updates).


Valles Caldera launches new junior ranger program

On June 8, July 6, and August 3, park rangers will offer fire history walks, where visitors can learn about the fire-related ecological history of the Jemez Mountains. The exact time and meeting location will be chosen as the event approaches (check this link for updates).

The park will also offer several night programs including “Sopapillas y Estrellas” on Friday, July 5; astrophotography workshops, ranger-led moonlit hikes around Cerro la Jara, and stargazing events. For more information and schedules, check this link. Some events require registration.
