Cătălin Cherecheș will be extradited from Germany

The fugitive mayor of Baia Mare, Cătălin Cherecheș will be extradited and will be brought from Germany. The decision was taken by the judges in Munich.

Convicted on November 24, 2023, to five years in prison with execution for bribery, Cherecheș managed to flee country, although he was under judicial control. The former mayor of the municipality of Baia Mare, Cătălin Cherecheș, was detained on November 28, 2023 by the police, in the German city of Augsburg.

In the decision of the Superior Regional Court in Munich, it is written that the judges did not consider that the fact that Cătălin Cherecheș complained about the conditions in the penitentiaries in Romania, nor those extraordinary legal orders filed against the court decision in our country, would be obstacles. The Court was referring to those extraordinary appeals, one of which, by the way, was rejected today by the magistrates of the High Court, the other will be judged on Friday. But these were not an impediment for the prosecutors there.

The Romanian police announce that the former mayor of Baia Mare Cătălin Cherecheş will be brought to the country to serve his prison sentence, on a date that will be established by mutual agreement with the German partners.

“Following the international police cooperation between the Romanian Police and the police structures in Germany, as well as the decision of the German judiciary, a Romanian Police escort will bring the man from Baia Mare to the country, in order to execute the warrant, on a date that will be established by mutual agreement, with the German partners”, according to a press release from the Romanian Police.

The Minister of Justice, Alina Gorghiu, said on Wednesday, about the extradition of the fugitive Cătălin Cherecheş from Germany, that the procedure is ongoing and she is convinced that we will have an outcome in a short period of time.

“The last correspondence is the one related to the conditions in the penitentiary and related to the fact that the definite decision of the court in Romania is valid, because he, through the team of lawyers, challenged the last decision then. The procedure is ongoing and I am convinced that we will have an outcome in a short period of time”, said the Minister of Justice, about the case of the fugitive mayor.

Alina Gorghiu specified that there were no more intermediate terms in court. As we get closer to the end, I will be able to give additional information. There are no problems, so far, raised, no additional clarifications requested, it seems that the German court has received the information from the National Administration of Penitentiaries (ANP) and from the enforcement court and they are, I hope, clarified“, Gorghiu also pointed out.

Trial of Chereches’ in-laws kicks off

Meanwhile, Cătălin Cherecheş’s in-laws were at the Mureș Court on Thursday, where the trial began in which they are accused of bribery. They would have tried to give between 50,000 and 100,000 euros to the mother of a judge so that she would give a favorable solution in Cherecheș’s corruption case.

The two, under judicial control, refused to make statements about the trial. The father-in-law limited himself to saying that it was a simple process and that he would wait for his son-in-law at the airport when he was brought into the country.
