Free senior health and wellness fair being held April 26 at ECC
The village of South Elgin, Elgin Community College, Kane Senior Council and the Association for Individual Development are hosting a free senior health and wellness fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, April 26, at ECC’s Building E at 1700 Spartan Drive.
Health screenings, informational sessions, more than 70 tables staffed by senior organizations, door prizes and refreshments will be available, according to the South Elgin village website.

Registration underway for first PADS of Elgin Home Run 5K
Signup has started for a new fundraising event, the PADS of Elgin Home Run 5K run and 1-mile walk, being held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 27, outside the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.
The 5K entry fee is $25 for anyone 14 or younger and $50 for those 15 and older. The cost to participate in the walk is $25 for anyone 12 or older, according to the event website.
PADS of Elgin provides emergency shelter and case management services to people who are homeless.

10 Elgin nonprofits to receive funding from the Seigle Foundation
Seigle Foundation has awarded $275,000 in grants to 10 Elgin-area organizations.
The agencies receiving money are Centro de Informacion, African American Coalition of Kane County, Chamber Music on the Fox, Elgin Area Historical Society, Children’s Theatre of Elgin, Elgin Master Chorale, Elgin Symphony Orchestra, Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra, Hamilton Wings and Side Street Studio Arts.

U-46 board OKs $600,000 land purchase for new Elgin middle school
The District U-46 School Board has unanimously approved the $600,000 purchase of 12.3 acres of vacant Elgin land at 2604 Rohrssen Road from the Archdiocese of Chicago.
A new middle school is to be built on the site at a cost of about $100 million, U-46 officials have said. The project to be completed by July 2026.
The board also was briefed at its March 18 meeting on the progress being made in converting Hawk Elementary School in Bartlett into a middle school.
Chief of Staff Brian Lindholm told the board that the district is moving a community engagement session from April 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Eastview Middle School, 321 Oak Ave., Bartlett.
The later date means will allow staff to be able to discuss the new school’s boundary recommendations, which are to be presented to the board in April, Lindholm said.

St. Charles library program to spotlight the music of Willie Nelson
Country music legend Willie Nelson, 91, who released his 74th album last year, will be the focus of a program on Monday, April 8, at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave.
During “The History of Willie Nelson,” set to begin at 7 p.m., music historian Gary Wenstrup will trace the arc of Nelson’s career from his humble beginnings in small-town Texas to his struggles in Nashville to his shift to Outlaw Country to his now legendary status.
Wenstrup has taught courses on the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel and Motown Records for the Continuing Education Departments of College of DuPage and Oakton Community College, and has lectured at over 80 public libraries, event organizers said.

Geneva Police Department event to focus on scams that target seniors
With an increase in scammers targeting senior citizens, the Geneva Police Department will hold a free educational seminar at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at the Geneva Public Library, 227 S. Seventh St.
Senior Care Officers Tony Duncan and Kaley Smith will lead the seminar, which will focus on financial scam prevention, education and warning signs.
The event is geared toward seniors, but the educational tools are important for all ages, police officials said. Duncan and Smith will answer audience questions following the presentation.
Registration for the program through the Geneva Public Library’s website is recommended but not required, organizers said.
Kane Forest District planning all-ages scavenger hunt in St. Charles
The Forest Preserve District of Kane County will hold an outdoor scavenger hunt from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at Tekakwitha Woods Forest Preserve at 35W076 Villa Maria Road in St. Charles.
Participants will meet a naturalist at the preserve shelter to gather directions and supplies before htting the trails to find items on the hunt list. Participants who have completed their quest will head back to the shelter to claim a prize on a first-come, first- served basis, district officials said.
