HUD event offered housing resources to New Mexicans

BERNALILLO, N.M. (KRQE) – Native American families looking to one day be homeowners got to take part in a first-of-its-kind “tribal house party” on Wednesday. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development teamed up with the Office of Native American Programs and the Bernalillo Public Schools superintendent to host an event to encourage home ownership in the community.

“There has been no tribal house party that has happened across the country, so in all 50 states and every region in the country, we have had house parties to talk to folks about home ownership and we’re focusing on disenfranchised communities who have been pushed out of the process one way or another,” said HUD Southwest Regional Administrator Candace Valenzuela.

Attendees were given free access to housing counseling agencies, vendors, lenders, and Native American home loan programs.
